Web Browsers


The Internet is a vast sea of information represented in many formats and stored on many computers. A large portion of the internet is organized as the www which uses hypertext. Web browsers are used navigate through information found on the net. That allow us to retrieve the information spread across the internet and display it using the HTML     Eg:

·         Hot Java
·         Netscape Navigator
·         Internet Explorer

Hot Java

Is the web browser from the SUN Microsystems chat enables of interactive content on the web, using Java Language.

Netscape Navigator

From Netscape Communication Corporation is a general purpose, browser that can run Java applets most widely used browser today. N.N. has many useful features such as visual display about downloading process and indication of the number bytes download. It also supports Java script, a scripting language used in HTML documents.

Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer is another popular browser developed by Microsoft Windows 95, NT and XP workstations. Both navigator and Explore use tool bars, icons, menus and dialog boxes for easy navigation Explorer uses a just in time(JIT) compiler which greatly increases the speed of execution.

Primary Functions of The Internet

People use the internet for 5 primary functions
1.   To get information
2.   To communicate with others
3.   Buy or sell goods and services
4.   To gain knowledge
5.   To have a fun

Uniform Resource Locators (URL)

Each HTML document has an internet address called URL
URL is a unique address on the internet similar to an e-mail address
It specifies a web server address or a specific web page residing on a web server

URL   COMPONETS

  • URLS are divided in to four parts
  • Some URLS are case sensitive

Transfer Protocol
Method by which information is transfer across the internet
Server Name
The web sever address
Directory path
Directory location of a file stored on a wed sever
File Name
            Name of the webpage requested by the browser

Protocol

An agreed set of rules called protocols were laid down in order to facilitate exchange information. A common language protocol
(Hypertext transfer protocol)

Web space or cyberspace

The collective total of all hypertext links.

TCP/IP - Transmission control protocol

Terminology
  • HTTP                    : communication standard
  • Web pages            : documents stored on web servers
·         Web servers          : computers capable of serving request(a function of software rather than hardware)
  • Web clients           : devises that can request web resources
  • Web browser        : a software program within which web document are viewed.

 A website is always under construction, is flexible but you should have an aim and a goal, start, small, dream big.

Speed  
Users need to find what they want quickly                     - quick loading pages
Pages need to load in seconds                                          -  easy to find content,
                                                                                          -  No frames!!
                                                                                          - Only useful flash.
The priority is for each page to load quickly                   -  Few low resolution graphics
and information as possible

Display and setting out
  • Short narrow pages (no scrolling side ways)
  • No fussy backgrounds
  • No frames
  • Set font size 100% (not point to pixel)
  • Set table content 90% (width)
  • Set cells 30%
Creating a Webpage

There are two types of information found in an html document.
·         The content
·         The mark-up

The content is nothing more than regular text containing information that you want to present.
The mark up is the series of tag used to identify, particular portions of the content.
